“Ozone for Life” is this year’s motto to remind us of the responsibility of all citizens and sectors to take care of this layer of gas that protects the Earth from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays, thus contributing to the preservation of life on the planet.
Agroaceite, through its responsible practices in its tropical oil processes and voluntary actions with local alliances, contributes to the preservation of the Ozone Layer and the environment.
Carbon Negative
According to the international organization WWF, in their article “Planting on degraded lands”, oil palm has the capacity to assimilate and/or absorb 15 metric tons of carbon dioxide CO2 per hectare. This means that it is carbon negative, since the number of tons of carbon dioxide that the palm absorbs is greater than the total emissions generated by agricultural and industrial activities. In Guatemala, the emission of greenhouse gases from the production of palm oil represents only 0.45% of the nation’s total emissions.
“Agroaceite has assigned hectares for forest conservation, which contributes to environmental balance and reduces greenhouse gases, thus mitigating global warming,” as stated by Fernando Bolaños, CEO of Agroaceite. According to a WWF report, forests absorb a billion tons of carbon dioxide.
Reforestation in Agroaceite
Agroaceite has implemented reforestation programs for several years, on the riverbanks, in alliance with the National Council for Protected Areas of Retalhuleu, neighboring communities and volunteer workers of the company. These reforestation actions have helped to preserve water, flora and fauna -which make up the ecosystem-; to reduce flooding and the emission of greenhouse gases.
“Agroaceite is the fourth company worldwide, third in Latin America and first in Central America to obtain the RSPO Next certification,” added Bolaños. This certification emphasizes No Deforestation, No Peat Soil Plantations, Reduction of Greenhouse Gases, Respect for Human Rights, Traceability and Transparency at all organizational levels. This standard provides a series of advanced criteria that exceed the RSPO standard.
State-of-the-art technologies in Agroaceite’s tropical oil plant:

Biodigesters
The water used inside Agroaceite’s oil processing plants does not come from the river but is extracted from a well and remains in a closed circuit. After the water is used, it is integrated into biodigesters. The biodigesters are containers that process and reduce organic matter through an anaerobic and aerobic process.
