Last April, Agroaceite began the diploma course “Community Adaptation to Climate Change” developed in alliances with the Institute for Climate Change -ICC-, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources -MARN- and the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction -CONRED-; who have contributed to impart the theoretical and practical sessions.
The II Module of the Diploma Course consisted of theoretical and practical sessions on planning and applying climate change adaptation measures, taught by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources -MARN-. The Course III Module will be taught by the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (COLRED) addressing risk management issues.
The participants of the diploma course are company workers, community leaders and government entities from the municipalities of Genoa, Coatepeque, Ayutla, Caballo Blanco, Retalhuleu and Asintal.
The Governmental entities participating in the Diploma Course are Municipal Firefighters, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources -MARN-, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food -MAGA-, National Council of Protected Areas -CONAP-, and the Municipal Environmental Management Unit.
During the module a reforestation day was carried out in one of the company’s farms located in Genoa, Quetzaltenango; to reforest the bank of the El Rosario river.
A field tour was carried out with the 50 participants of the course, touring the upper, middle and lower parts of the Ocós River to activate and practice the knowledge acquired in:
- Conservation of natural resources,
- Integrated watershed management, and
- Climate change adaptation measures.
The Loma Linda Trail was visited, to learn about the natural resource conservation practices carried out by the community
